Hutchison International Limited, under the leadership of its founder, Sir Douglas Clague, begins an acquisition programme which effectively gains control of A S Watson Company, Davie, Boag and Company Limited, Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company Limited and China Provident Company Limited.

Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) establishes container handling facilities at Hongkong and Whampoa Dock's North Point and Hung Hom wharves.
