Environmental Conservation
Through company donations, sponsorship, and employee participation,
various divisions and subsidiaries within Hutchison take part
in environmental conservation activities regularly, including
tree-planting, clean-up campaigns, and environmental protection
education programmes. Teams are set up to review day-to-day
operational practices and processes to make best use of energy,
environmentally friendly and recyclable materials to ensure
environmental protection practices are carried out on a continuous
basis.
These Group companies include:
Cheung Kong Infrastructure
| 1. |
|
Leader in transforming community
waste into cost-effective raw material |
| |
|
- Use fuel ash (a waste residue left over from burning
coal in a power station) in cement manufacture and
in concrete production in Hong Kong and Southern China.
- Use slag from blast furnaces and foundries in cement
manufacture.
- Use zeolite instead of river sand in cement clinker
production.

in cement production.
- Flue Gas Sulphurisation Gypsum (a by- product of
a power station’s air pollution control measures)
is used in cement production.
|
| 2. |
|
Developer of Waste-to-Energy Processes |
| |
|
In conjunction with the Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology, a pilot co – combustion
plant is being constructed and trialed in 2004 at Tap
Shek Kok. The objective is to prove that Municipal Solid
Waste can be reduced and consumed in a sustainable, safe
and pollution free manner using processes developed and
patented in Hong Kong. If so, Hong Kong’s waste
management problems will be significantly reduced as outlined
in The Hong Government’s “ Waste Reduction
Framework Plan 1998-2007”. |
| |
|
|
| 3. |
|
Developer of Pollution Free Energy for Motor
Vehicles |
| |
|
In its alliance with Stuart Energy Systems Inc. in Canada,
a pilot hydrogen energy station at Tap Shek Kok is will
be the base for trial of a hydrogen powered hybrid 41
seat bus. Hydrogen is produced by electrolysis from water
using electricity. The emission from the bus is water
and, if adopted on a large scale in the urban area, will
dramatically reduce kerb-side pollution. The trial is
targeted for completion in 2004. |
| |
|
|
| 4. |
|
Recycler of Waste Materials to Raw Materials |
| |
|
- Fresh concrete, which is returned from projects
as waste, is recycled.
- Waste water at concrete plants is recycled into
fresh concrete.
- Concrete from construction and demolition waste
is able to be recycled through our concrete plants
to produce structural concrete.
- Asphalt from milled asphalt pavements is recycled
both in Hong Kong and the Philippines.
|
| 5. |
|
Developer of Environmentally Friendly Production
Facilities |
| |
|
New concrete production facilities are designed and
constructed to:
|
| |
|
- Minimize energy consumption
- Achieve zero waste water emission
- Control fugitive dust emission by containment
- Improve the exterior
- Minimise noise pollution
|
| |
|
Existing cement production facilities in Hong Kong and
the mainland have been modified to achieve: |
| |
|
- Zero discharge of waste water
- Air emission levels which are lower than statutory
requirements
- Limestone powder is used to remove acidic gases
from emissions
