Hongkong International Terminals (HIT)
HIT
owns and operates the berths of Kwai Chung Container Terminals
4, 6, 7 and 9 and serves over 30 international shipping lines
along its 11 berths. HIT also has a joint venture with COSCO
Pacific Limited to operate two berths at Terminal 8 (East),
known as COSCO-HIT (CHT).
In 1998, the Hong Kong Government granted land at Tsing Yi to
HIT, Modern Terminals Limited and Asia Container Terminals
Limited to build Container Terminal 9, a six-berth container
terminal that is expected to be completed in 2004. HIT's first
berth was completed in 2003. The second berth is expected
to commence operation in early 2005.
HIT has made massive investments to create an operation of
unrivalled efficiency. HIT and CHT combined facilities and
equipment include 50 quay cranes, one harbour crane, 24 rail-mounted
gantry cranes, 118 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, 12 overhead
bridge cranes and a fully computerised port management system.
To cope with the increasing barge traffic from Southern China,
HIT has built a dedicated barge-handling facility at Terminal
4. The use of advanced communications equipment, sophisticated
engineering and maintenance facilities also help keep the
operation running smoothly around the clock all year round.
HIT
was elected as "Best Container Terminal Operator"
in the Asian Freight Industry Awards in three consecutive
years from 1991 to 1993. In 1997, HIT was the first Asian
company to be awarded the "Computerworld Smithsonian
Award" for its visionary use of information technology
in the Transportation industry. Along with the award of "HKCSI
Innovative Service Award" (organised by Hong Kong Coalition
of Service Industries), HIT has long been recognised as the
leader in the container terminal industry both in Hong Kong
and overseas. In 2000, HIT was awarded the IT Excellence Silver
Award from the Hong Kong Computer Society. In 2002, HIT was
voted by Lloyd's List Maritime Asia as the "Best Container
Terminal Operator" and was granted the Intelligent20
Awards by Intelligent Enterprise Asia.
