Overview
The property interests of the Hutchison
Whampoa Property and Hotel Group (HWPHG) comprises of
Hongkong & Whampoa Dock Company Limited (HWD), Hutchison
Properties Limited (HPL) and Cavendish International Holdings
Limited (CIHL).
 HWD's
history is as long and rich as Hong Kong itself. The company
was established in 1863 to acquire docks and repair yards
at Whampoa, on the Pearl River in China, and the newly
constructed dry docks at Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island.
The company ran one of the largest dry-docking, ship repair
and shipbuilding operations in the Far East for over a century,
surviving two world wars and, at its peak, handling an average
of 25 vessels per week. In 1960, it was servicing the ships
of no fewer than 23 nationalities and nine navies.
 HWD first ventured into property development in 1969 and,
by the late 1970s, its business was mostly property related,
with the Aberdeen and Hung Hom docks being redeveloped into
today's Aberdeen Centre, Hunghom Bay Centre, Whampoa Garden
and The Harbourfront. The dockyard operations were then merged
with those of Taikoo Dockyard & Engineering Company and
moved to Tsing Yi.
HPL was incorporated in March 1971, concentrating on property
investment, agency and management services. In the mid-70s,
it launched into property development with a residential complex
in Kwai Chung and the ambitious Sea Ranch holiday resort on
Lantau Island.
The managerial resources and operations of HWD and HPL were
merged in 1980 to create HWPG, although both companies remain
separate corporate entities.
In 1993, Hutchison Whampoa Limited formed a new, wholly owned
company, Hutchison Whampoa Properties Limited, to hold all
the property interests of HWD, HPL and HWL's then privatised
subsidiary, CIHL.
 The Hotel Group was established in 1997 to focus on the development
and operations of Hutchison's hotel business worldwide. The
Hotel Group has expanded rapidly and is currently operating
hotels in Hong Kong and the Mainland China.
