Telecommunications (Australia) (57.82% interest) ("HTA")
is leading the introduction of innovative wireless services
in the Australian mobile market. Its principal activities
include; the operation of its Orange
Mobile and Paging businesses as the provider of choice for
value based voice and messaging services, and pioneering the
introduction of content-rich mobile multimedia services under
the global brand 3.
The Orange
mobile communications business provides customers with strong
value based voice and messaging services. The business has
three core products: Orange
mobile, Orange
Messaging and Orange
Information Services.
The
3G business is operated under a subsidiary of HTA, Hutchison
3G Australia in which Telecom Corporation of New Zealand has
a 19.9% stake. Hutchison 3G Australia is well positioned to
be Australia's first mover in the exciting new field of 3G

Hong Kong
Hutchison
Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited ("Hutchison
Telecom"), a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Limited
(“HWL”), is responsible for managing HWL’s
operations of mobile services in Hong Kong and Macau, telecom
retail services and call centre services, as well as mobile
communication consultancy services in Mainland China. For
its mobile services in Hong Kong and Macau, the Company has
brought in two strategic investors, NTT DoCoMo and NEC, who
respectively own 24.1% and 5% stake.
Hutchison started mobile business in Hong Kong in 1983 and
has always been a pioneer in the development of mobile communications
during its past 20 years of operations, deploying multiple
mobile technologies in Hong Kong, including 1G TACS/AMPS,
2G GSM/CDMA/PCS, 2.5G GPRS/IS95B and 3G UMTS mobile communications.
It was the first operator in the world to launch a CDMA commercial
network in 1995 and the first in Asia to launch GSM Dualband
network in 1998. Hutchison Telecom was awarded a second-generation
mobile phone licence in Macau in October 2000, and officially
launched its GSM Dualband mobile service in the territory
in August 2001.
Hutchison
Telecom is currently the largest mobile operator in Hong Kong,
providing superior GSM Dualband and CDMA services with superb
network quality and extensive automatic international roaming
and GPRS roaming coverage under the “Orange”
brand. The Company is the first operator in Hong Kong to roll
out world-class 3G services under the “3”
brand name in January 2004, forming an integral part of HWL's
global 3G footprint.
With
its persistent pursuit of delivering the most innovative and
best quality mobile data services, the Company leads the market
in offering a rich portfolio of pioneering mobile multimedia
services, wireless corporate solutions, short messaging, mobile
games, wireless Internet and m-commerce. Hutchison Telecom
will continue its efforts to ensure that Hong Kong remains
at the forefront of the global mobile multimedia arena.
India
The
Group's presence in India began with Hutchison
Max Telecom Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in 1994. In 2000,
the Group acquired interests in the major cities of Delhi
and Kolkota and in the state of Gujarat, all with GSM900 technology.
Hutchison Max Telecom, a partnership with local companies
Max India and Kotak Mahindra, launched its GSM service in
Mumbai in late 1995. The brand "Orange"
was launched in February 2000 and has become the most recognised
brand for offering the latest in wirefree services due to
the enhanced technology and user-friendly products and services.
As of April 2003, Hutchison Max Telecom had over 686,600 subscribers.
In
Delhi, Hutchison has an interest in Hutchison Essar Telecom
Ltd., earlier called Sterling Cellular Ltd. The Group acquired
49% of the equity shares in Sterling Cellular in January 2000
and the balance of 51% is owned by its Indian partners, principally
Essar Teleholdings Limited. As of April 2003, Hutchison Essar
Telecom had over 619,900 subscribers.
In Kolkota, Hutchison's interest is in Hutchison Telekom
East Ltd (HTEL). It offers its services under the "Hutch"
brand. HTEL has a base of over 286,500 customers.
In Gujarat, Hutchison's interest, acquired in September 2000,
is in Fascel Ltd, Gujarat's number one cellular operator.
Fascel operates in Gujarat under the brand name Hutch. As
of April 2003, the company had more than 485,600 subscribers
and is one of the largest non-metro cellular operators in
India.
In
August 2001, Hutchison acquired additional licences to operate
1800 MHz mobile phone services in key metropolitan areas,
including Karnataka (includes Bangalore), Chennai and Andhra
Pradesh (includes Hyderabad) to build on the Group's existing
premium footprint with a strong exposure to the South India
hi-tech belt. Hutchison has a presence in these areas through
Hutchison Essar South Ltd. (HESL), a 49:51 joint venture with
Essar Teleholdings Ltd. HESL operates in Andhra Pradesh, Chennai
and Karnataka under the brand name "Hutch". As of
April 2003, HESL had over 171,200 subscribers across these
areas.
Hutchison affiliates jointly account for one of the two largest
cellular blocks in India with a base of over 2,249,900 customers
out of a total base of around 10 million cellular customers
in all of the India.
Thailand
Hutchison has a significant interest in Hutchison
CAT Wireless MultiMedia Limited ("HCWML"), formerly
known as "Tawan Mobile Telecom Company Limited",
a joint venture with the Communication Authority of Thailand
("CAT"), which has been granted a marketing service
agreement from the CAT to provide marketing service for 800
MHz CDMA cellular services in the Greater Bangkok Area and
Central Thailand until 2015. HCWML, under the "Hutch"
brand, offers leading edge data and value added service based
on the CDMA2000 1X technology.
Hutchison also has a longstanding operation, which offers
paging services (including a newspager information service)
nationwide in Thailand, and operates a successful web portal
"lemomonline.com" which provides content and features
geared to the Thai market.

Sri Lanka
Hutchison acquired 100% of Lanka
Cellular Services (Private) Limited in August 1997 which
has a license to provide nationwide cellular services in Sri
Lanka. The company currently operates an ETACS network (predominantly
covering Colombo) and a GSM900 network under the brand name
"Rankatha" (English translation "Golden Talk")
in the 35 major interior towns of Sri Lanka. Hutchison has
pioneered the application of wireless technology and user-friendly
products, in the provision of strong value based and accessible
voice services to the rural populations of Sri Lanka.
The Company currently has 60,000 subscribers, most of whom
are in the interior of towns.
