Internet and E-commerce
Hutchison Whampoa is actively expanding its Internet business
and setting up B2B and B2C e-commerce operations in Hong Kong
and the Asian region.
The Group has launched a number of major e-business initiatives including
Hutchison holds a 24.565% interest in the TOM
Group, a Chinese-language media group in Greater China.
Its diversified operations span four media sectors: Internet,
Outdoor, Publishing and Sports & Entertainment, in each
of which TOM Group has secured market leadership.
Strategic alliances have also been formed with several top
international companies and local industry leaders including:
- Alliance with Priceline.com to form Hutchison-Priceline
(Travel) Ltd to introduce the buyer-driven e-commerce
system to Asia.
- Joint venture with its parent company Cheung
Kong (Holdings) Limited, the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking
Corporation Limited, and Hang Seng Bank to form iBusiness Corporation
Limited, to facilitate e-commerce businesses on the
Internet.
- Joint ventrure with PetroChina, CNPC, Goldman Sachs,
BOCI, CCB International Investment Co. and Industrial and
Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Co. Ltd. to form PetroChina
Hutchison Whampoa Information Technology Co. Ltd. responsible
for providing technological service and support to www.energyahead.com,
a large-scale petrochemical e-commerce portal serving the
energy industry in China and aboard.
Joint venture with Hewlett-Packard Company to form ESD
Services Limited to develop and promote the Hong Kong SAR
Government's "Electronic Service Delivery" Scheme.
The award winning ESDlife
offers one-stop government and commercial services on the
Internet as well as territory-wide ESDkiosks.
The Hutchison Group strategy is to focus and coordinate the
e-commerce operations and initiatives of each of its core
businesses under Hutchison
E-Commerce Limited (HECL) to benefit from the opportunities
in each business.
As the e-commerce flagship and the e-commerce enabler of
HWL, the roles of HECL are to operate and hold companies of
various e-commerce projects; develop e-commerce strategies
and solutions for Group companies; facilitate and support
various e-commerce initiatives taken within the HWL group
of companies. These include providing technology and business
consulting services, project management and implementation
support; and acting as the incubator of HWL investment projects
with Internet and industrial expertise to ensure successful
deployment of projects.
