Hutchison Telecommunications is a leading owner and operator of worldwide telecommunications and Internet infrastructure, offering a wide range of telecommunications services in 11 countries.

Hutchison launched the successful Orange brand in the UK in 1994 and listed the Company on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ in New York in 1996. Similarly, in 1997, Hutchison started investment in VoiceStream (now T-Mobile USA), one of the leading GSM operators in the United States. In 1999 and 2000, Hutchison sold its Orange and VoiceStream interests and has re-invested the greater part of the proceeds to develop its global third-generation (3G) mobile broadband telecommunications business, based on the European UMTS (WCDMA) 3G standard.

Trading under the “3” brand, Hutchison has been leading the way in 3G development worldwide. It was the first company to roll out commercial 3G services in Europe and is building a totally new kind of consumer experience based on high speed mobile video telephony, streaming and downloads, as well as music, voice and data services.

Globally, Hutchison Whampoa has 3G operations in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Macau, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Since the service was first rolled out in the UK and Italy in March 2003, and subsequently in Austria, Denmark and Sweden, Hutchison has gained over 29.6 million customers worldwide, 20 million in Europe (as of 28 March 2011) and is one of the fastest growing mobile operators in Europe, having created in excess of 6,000 new jobs in its European 3G businesses.

The United Kingdom

After acquiring one of the five 3G licences auctioned by the UK Government in 2000, 3 UK was the first operator to roll out a 3G network and services in the UK (March 2003) and has over 7.5 million 3G subscribers as of 3 August 2011.

Ireland

3 Ireland, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa, was awarded licence A in the Republic of Ireland 3G licence bid process in June 2002. Launched in 2005, 3 is Ireland's largest high-speed network. 3 has 97 per cent population coverage for high-speed mobile broadband and 3G services, and nationwide voice and text coverage. 3 was awarded the National Broadband Scheme contract to rollout broadband services to the remaining 10 per cent of the country that did not have adequate broadband connectivity by the Irish government. The Scheme was completed on time and in budget in December 2010. In March 2011, 3 was the first mobile operator to remove data restrictions and out-of-bundle charges for smartphone users in the Irish market with its innovative "All you can eat" data price plans. This trend was continued in August 2011, when 3 launched Ireland's first Prepay offer with "All you can eat" data.

3 Ireland has 709,000 customers as of 3 August 2011.

Italy

3 Italia S.p.A., Hutchison's majority-owned subsidiary in Italy, was granted a 3G licence by the Italian Government in October 2000. After achieving the fastest mobile network rollout in Italian history, 3 Italy was the first company to introduce video mobile services to Italy in March 2003. 3 Italy has over 9.1 million customers as of 3 August 2011.

Sweden and Denmark

Hutchison's joint venture with Sweden's Investor AB, Hi3G Access AB, was established in December 2000 and was subsequently awarded 3G licences in Sweden and Denmark.

3 Sweden commenced 3G operations in Sweden in May 2003, while 3 Denmark commenced operations in October 2003. Sweden and Denmark have approximately two million customers as of 3 August 2011.

Austria

3 Austria is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa. Hutchison 3G Austria GmbH started in May 2003 with the brand "3" as the first sole mobile multimedia provider in Austria. 3 offers multimedia products such as mobileTV, music and video calling on UMTS-handsets and in addition provides the classic ways of communication (voice calling, SMS and MMS) as well as mobile broadband. 3 has enriched its offer with popular internet services such as Facebook, Google and eBay on every 3mobile and is a trendsetter in the Austrian market with its 3WebCube and the 3Superphones®. Furthermore, 3 provides more than 50 mobile TV - and radio channels on 3mobiles as well as on 3data modems. 3 Austria has over 1.2 million customers as of 3 August 2011.
